About Me!

After a long career in Nursing I was advised to start Pilates by my chiropractor to help with my lower back and hip pain. From learning how to increase my core strength, mobilise my spine, strengthen my joints and focus on good posture, I found over time both my lower back pain and hip pain resolved. I gained a passion for Pilates, which led me to train as a Pilates Teacher with The Pilates Foundation and CYQ. In 2017 I undertook further training with Body Control becoming an accredited Body Control Mat work Teacher. I am currently based in Hadleigh, Suffolk.

More recently I have undertaken equipment training with Lisa Bradshaw. I remain passionate about Pilates and continue to keep myself up to date and learning new skills. I want my clients to understand the objective of the exercises, to move well and develop awareness of how their body feels, but above all to feel brilliant and enjoy Pilates.

Jeannette Mayes, Pilates Instructor

“If your spine is inflexibly stiff at 30, you are old. If it is completely flexible at 60, you are young.”

Joseph H. Pilates (1883-1967)

About Joseph Pilates

The remarkable and proven system we teach was created by Joseph Pilates born in 1883 near Dusseldorf Germany. Little was known about his earlier life but he appears to have been a frail child suffering from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever. He worked hard to overcome these ailments, which led him to become a competent skier, gymnast and diver. In 1912, Pilates lived in England working as a self-defense instructor, boxer and body builder. He was interned during WW1 along with other German Nationals. During this time he developed his technique of physical fitness teaching his fellow inmates. During the latter part of the war he worked as an orderly and it was in these hospitals he developed equipment to rehabilitate bed-ridden patients taking springs from beds to support patients limbs.

In the 1920s Pilates immigrated to New York and on route he met his wife Clara. Together they opened a ‘body conditioning gym’. The gym became very popular amongst the dance world. During his lifetime his method of exercise was called contrology, following his death in 1967 it became known as Pilates.
